Changing to an induction hob: check electrics before purchase

Get the exact hob requirements checked before buying. Some models have plug connections; others need a different supply. The existing cooker connection does not establish compatibility.

Check the chosen appliance and its electrical supply together.

Start with the exact model

Keep the product code and installation instructions, including electrical input and connection information. Similar-looking hobs can have different requirements. A retailer’s short description may not provide everything the installer needs.

Include any separate oven or other cooking appliance that will be connected nearby. The existing installation must be considered against the proposed combination, not just the appliance being removed.

Have the existing arrangement assessed

Have the existing arrangement assessed

Tell Max what is currently installed and whether there is a cooker connection or socket. Safe photographs can help the first discussion, but leave covers and connections in place.

The assessment establishes whether the existing circuit can serve the proposed appliance or needs alteration or replacement. It covers the connection, isolation and protection as well as the hob’s electrical demand.

Coordinate the change from gas

Coordinate the change from gas

A gas-to-induction change needs an electrical plan before the installation date. Agree separately who makes the gas arrangement safe and who handles cabinet or worktop changes.

The appliance’s dimensions, ventilation and cabinet requirements also matter. The kitchen fitter, appliance installer and electrician should work from the same final specification.

Allow for access and handover

Allow for access and handover

Share floor and cabinet access before assuming a new route can be concealed. If the room is already finished, ask what disruption and making good the supply work could involve.

Confirm whether the quotation covers the fixed supply, final appliance connection and any cabinet work. Retailer installation packages can have different limits, so check the responsibilities before booking delivery.

Your planning checklist

  • Hob make, exact model and instructions
  • Other cooking appliances being retained
  • Existing arrangement described safely
  • Cabinet and worktop plan
  • Who handles gas, cabinetry and final appliance installation

Questions answered

Can I buy an induction hob before checking the electrical supply?

It is better to have the exact model requirements assessed first. Hob specifications vary, and the existing connection may need alteration. Share the installation instructions and other cooking appliances being retained so any supply work can be planned before delivery, cabinet cutting or an installation appointment.

Ask Max about this
Does changing from gas to induction always mean a new circuit?

Not automatically; the proposed hob and existing installation determine the electrical work. There may be a suitable existing arrangement or additional work may be needed. Gas disconnection and cabinet alterations are separate responsibilities, so coordinate all relevant trades against the final appliance specification.

Ask Max about this
Can my induction hob share the supply with a separate oven?

Both appliance requirements and the existing circuit need assessment together. The answer cannot be established from a hob rating or socket photograph alone. Provide the exact oven and hob models, including any retained appliance, so the proposed connection and any enabling work can be considered.

Ask Max about this
Will the retailer install a hob if the electrical connection needs changing?

Retailer installation packages vary and may exclude alterations to the fixed installation or cabinetry. Check the service terms and confirm that the site meets the installer requirements before delivery. If the supply is uncertain, arrange an electrical assessment rather than assuming the delivery appointment includes upgrade work.

Ask Max about this
Can a plug-in induction hob use an existing kitchen socket?

Some induction hobs are designed for a plug connection; others require a different supply arrangement. The exact model instructions and existing circuit determine suitability. Check them before purchase, including any separate oven or other cooking equipment sharing the installation.
