Plan this job

The decisions that
shape the work.

The finished room layout sets the socket, lighting and appliance positions. The existing installation and builder’s programme determine any associated electrical work and when routes need to remain accessible.

01

Use and final layout

Use the drawings to show how each room will be furnished and used, including kitchen equipment, appliances and lighting groups. Settle the electrical positions around that layout before cable routes are fixed. The planned equipment also helps establish the capacity the extension will need.

02

Existing installation and supply

Share any existing electrical information and the equipment planned for the whole project. Additional demand or new circuits may require associated work to the existing installation. The assessment should establish what is needed; a larger extension does not automatically mean a full-house rewire.

03

Timing the work with your builder

Share the builder's programme, the dates when routes will close up and any heating or alarm requirements. Agree who provides each part of the work, including fire-stopping and repairs to finishes. Coordinate first fix, final fitting, power interruptions and electrical records with the wider build.

Practical answers

Questions about house extension electrics.

When should the electrician be involved?

Start when useful drawings are available, before cable routes and surfaces are fixed. Set the layout decisions and electrical dates alongside the builder’s programme.

Ask Max about this
Will an extension need a new consumer unit or a full rewire?

Not automatically. The proposed demand and condition of the existing installation determine whether associated work is needed. A quotation should identify any consumer-unit changes or existing-circuit repairs separately from wiring the extension.

Ask Max about this
What electrical paperwork should I receive for an extension?

Ask which electrical installation certificate and any Building Regulations compliance record apply to the work. They serve different purposes, so confirm both responsibilities before work starts and retain the documents with your property records.

Ask Max about this
How is the price for house-extension electrics worked out?

The layout, appliance loads, lighting controls and available routes shape the quotation. Assessment may also identify work needed in the existing installation before the extension can be connected. Send current drawings and separate essential items from optional additions so the agreed scope and later changes remain clear.

Ask Max about this
Can the existing house stay powered while extension wiring is installed?

Some work can be separated from occupied areas, but connection and testing require planned isolation. Agree which circuits and rooms may be affected, especially for home working or essential equipment. The attendance sequence depends on the design, existing installation and safe access during the wider build.

Ask Max about this
Should extension sockets and lights be decided before plasterboarding?

Yes, settle the useful positions and operation before routes close wherever possible. Include furniture, kitchen units, doors and fixed equipment on one current plan. Changes after plasterboarding may involve reopening surfaces or revising the installation, so tell the electrician promptly when the building layout changes.
