Light the approach to a door, side access or driveway when you need it. Plan PIR sensor coverage, aiming and switch-off behaviour, or replace an unreliable existing security light.

Share your plans and postcode. Max will discuss the work and price before you decide.

Useful security lighting detects the right approach and illuminates it without unnecessary triggering or spill. The sensor position, light direction and operating settings need to work together.

01

The approach to detect

Show the entrance, passage or driveway and the direction people approach from. Include nearby pavements, traffic, trees and shared access. The most useful sensor position depends on the area you need to detect, rather than simply choosing the widest possible coverage.

02

Light direction and operation

Describe the area you want to light and point out neighbouring windows. Consider the light's direction and shielding alongside its brightness. Discuss motion triggering, darkness settings, run time and manual control; the available options depend on the fitting or separate sensor you choose.

03

New point or replacement

Tell Max whether the current light has failed, stays on or triggers when you do not want it to. An existing position may be usable, but the wiring, protection and condition need checking. For a new position, agree cable access and any effect on finished walls.

Practical answers

Questions about security & pir lighting.

Are a PIR light and a dusk-to-dawn light the same?

No. A PIR detects movement; dusk-to-dawn control responds to ambient light. Some products combine functions, so choose around when the area needs light rather than relying on the security-light label.

Ask Max about this
Can a sensor avoid detecting the pavement?

Positioning, coverage adjustment or masking may help on products that support them. The detector still needs checking against the actual approach, pavement and passing traffic so reducing unwanted triggers does not leave the entrance unlit.

Ask Max about this
How bright can a security light be?

There is no single brightness limit that settles every nuisance complaint in England. Light direction, spill into neighbouring property and operating times matter alongside output. A brighter fitting is not automatically the better choice.

Ask Max about this
Why does my security light keep switching on when nobody is there?

A detector may be responding to movement outside the intended area, its settings or another equipment issue. Note whether passing vehicles, vegetation or other routine activity coincide with switching. An assessment can check positioning and the product options without assuming that a brighter replacement will solve unwanted triggering.

Ask Max about this
How can I stop a security light shining into neighbouring windows?

Aim and shield the light to illuminate the approach within your property, then consider its operating times and output. Nearby bedroom windows and shared boundaries should be part of the layout assessment. A light mounted on your own wall can still create nuisance if it spills beyond the intended area.

Ask Max about this
Can one sensor control several outside lights?

Some systems support that arrangement, but the detector, connected load and wiring must suit the chosen products. Show the entrances and areas that should trigger together. It may be more useful to keep separate zones if one sensor would otherwise light areas unnecessarily or miss a different approach.
