Plan this job

The decisions that
shape the work.

The tools and appliances you plan to run determine what the garage supply must support. Socket positions, the route from the house and any groundworks should follow that equipment plan.

01

Equipment demand

List the equipment you may use together, including heating and machinery. For larger tools, send the manufacturer's electrical requirements. This helps establish the demand rather than assuming every garage only needs power for a few small appliances.

02

Attached or detached route

Explain whether the garage is attached or detached, its distance from the house and any wall crossings. Show paving or landscaping along possible routes. Both the route and the existing electrical supply affect the work required.

03

Power at usable positions

Mark benches, doors and storage so the sockets remain accessible once the garage is in use. Discuss isolation, lighting and any provision you want for future equipment before the supply route is completed.

Practical answers

Questions about garage power supplies & sockets.

Does a detached garage always need its own consumer unit?

No, not always. The intended equipment demand and supply and protection arrangements determine the design. A separate consumer unit should follow that assessment rather than be included simply because the garage is detached.

Ask Max about this
Can the old garage cable be reused?

Its condition, route, capacity and protective arrangements need assessment against the proposed use. Visible cable size or the fact that a light works is not enough to decide.

Ask Max about this
Can I add a welder or large machine?

Check the machine’s exact supply requirements before purchase. Larger equipment can need a different connection or supply and may fall outside an ordinary garage installation. Do not assume an existing socket or garage cable is suitable.

Ask Max about this
Can a garage supply run a freezer, tumble dryer and power tools?

Only if the supply is suitable for their combined demand and normal use. A freezer, dryer and tools can need more than an arrangement intended for lighting and a charger. Assess the actual equipment before adding outlets; more sockets do not increase supply capacity.

Ask Max about this
Will fitting garage power mean digging up my driveway?

The available route determines whether groundworks are needed and where. An assessment should consider existing routes, land access and the finished surfaces involved. Do not excavate in anticipation of a particular cable route; agree the design, buried-service precautions and responsibility for reinstatement first.

Ask Max about this
Can garage sockets be positioned around a new workbench?

Yes, use the final bench, storage and equipment plan to discuss useful positions. Include tool cable lengths and places where plugs must remain reachable. The layout can then be considered with the supply capacity and routes, rather than adding outlets that still leave leads across the working area.
