Choose your starting point

Which room are you planning?

Room layouts, appliance choices and trade dates should be settled before new routes become difficult to change.

Your next step

A new kitchen layout

Bring the kitchen plan and appliance schedule. Ovens, hobs, extraction, worktop sockets and lighting all need to be considered together.

What the work includesScope, access and what to agree before the job.

What the job involves

Turn the room plan into an electrical schedule.

The room drawing and equipment requirements inform the circuits and connection positions. Agree what is included before cabinets, tiles or plaster limit access.

The scope, access and basis of the price are discussed before work is agreed.

Review the layout and the electrical requirements of fixed equipment.

Use the latest room drawing and appliance schedule. Changes to equipment can change the supply and connection requirements.

Agree socket, switch, lighting and isolation positions.

Coordinate accessories with cabinets, sanitaryware and the way the room is used before routes and finished surfaces are fixed.

Assess existing circuits and any need for new supplies.

The existing installation and new equipment are considered together. New supplies may be needed for some loads.

Coordinate first fix, final connections and access with other trades.

Agree first-fix access, fitting dates and who is responsible for extraction, final equipment readiness and making good.

Test and provide the relevant certification and notification.

Include final testing and the relevant records in the programme. Agree applicable notification before the work starts.

Before the appointmentUseful decisions to discuss with Max.

Before the appointment

Confirm these before the fitters arrive.

Bring the latest room drawing, appliance schedule, fitting choices and the dates your fitter or builder is working towards.

Final appliance information

Share the exact appliance models and their installation instructions before the wiring is designed. A different hob, oven or shower can change the supply and connection requirements.

Clear responsibility between trades

Agree who provides extraction ducting, openings, equipment, plaster repairs and final decoration. The electrical quote should define its boundaries.

Bathroom suitability and locations

Bathrooms have specific electrical requirements. Fittings and switches must suit their location. Discuss the room layout before buying products or setting positions.

Plan your particular job

Settle the details before the room is fitted.

A drawing becomes useful when it identifies the actual appliances, connection positions and installation stages.

Turning a kitchen drawing into connection positions

Use the current cabinet plan and appliance model list. Identify ovens, hobs, extraction and integrated appliances separately from worktop sockets and lighting. Confirm access to connections and isolation after units are installed.

Coordinate positions with the kitchen fitter before first fix, including appliance voids, service spaces, finished floor levels and splashbacks. A late appliance change can alter electrical requirements; agree how drawing revisions are communicated before cables and fittings are installed.

Coordinating the electrical stages

Agree when routes can be installed, when other trades may close them and what must be ready for final connections. Bathrooms also need the chosen shower, extraction and lighting specifications considered in the room design.

Allow time for final testing before the renovation is treated as complete. Identify who provides making good, product instructions and the records applicable to the actual work. A first-fix visit is one stage of the installation, not its completion or certification.

What affects the quoteEquipment, access and the details Max needs.

Understand the quote

What affects the scope and price?

A room renovation can range from local alterations to new circuits and complete rewiring. The quote needs the final layout, equipment and access details, including the boundaries with other trades.

The quote takes account of:

extent of circuit alterations; appliance and shower requirements; access before or after finishes; lighting, controls and extraction scope.

Send the details that influence the wiring.

Bring the latest room drawing, appliance schedule, fitting choices and the dates your fitter or builder is working towards.

  • Room plan with units, sanitaryware and equipment positions.
  • Electrical specifications for fixed appliances and showers.
  • Lighting and extraction preferences.
  • Builder or fitter dates and responsibility for making good.

Practical answers

Questions before you book.

Can the electrical work start before the kitchen plan is final?

Early advice is useful, but positions and equipment details need to be settled before wiring is installed. Changes after first fix can create extra work.

Ask Max about this
Can a replacement electric shower use the existing circuit?

Sometimes, if the existing supply is suitable for the exact replacement model. A higher-rated shower can need changes to the circuit or protection. Have both model specifications and the current installation checked before ordering; a similar casing does not establish electrical compatibility.

Ask Max about this
Do you fit bathroom extractor fans?

Yes. Tell Max about the room, the existing fan and what you want to improve. Agree the fan, controls, ducting and outside outlet before installation.

Ask Max about this
Is all kitchen electrical work notifiable?

No. Notification depends on the work. New circuits are notifiable, while some alterations to existing kitchen circuits are not. Bathrooms also have defined special-location requirements.

Ask Max about this
Can an induction hob use the existing cooker supply?

The hob's installation instructions and the existing circuit need to be checked together. Its headline power rating alone is not enough to approve the connection. Send the model details before ordering and say whether the oven, hob positions or kitchen layout are also changing.

Ask Max about this
Can you fit an illuminated bathroom mirror and shaver point?

Share the exact products and their proposed positions on the bathroom plan. Suitability depends on location, supply and the product instructions, so the electrical layout should be checked before tiling or purchasing. Mention whether the mirror also has a heater or other powered features.

Ask Max about this
Who arranges extractor fan ducting during a bathroom renovation?

Agree that responsibility with the electrician and fitter before work begins. The fan, duct route, external outlet and controls need to work together; replacing the electrical unit alone may not resolve poor extraction. Share the room plan and any existing ventilation problems with the enquiry.
