Plan this job

The decisions that
shape the work.

The layout should light the places you use, while the fittings must suit the ceiling, insulation and controls. Replacing existing lights and creating new positions can involve different access and ceiling repairs.

01

Replace existing lights or change the layout

Decide whether you want to replace lights in their existing positions or change the layout. Share the room plan, photographs and any known opening dimensions. Reusing holes and making new openings involve different work; a photograph alone cannot confirm that a replacement fitting will fit.

02

What is above the ceiling

Explain what is above the ceiling and whether there is access from a loft or the room above. Share any known ceiling and insulation details. The fittings and installation need to suit the ceiling construction, fire-performance requirements, heat conditions and the manufacturer's instructions.

03

Brightness, controls and future replacement

Consider the brightness, beam and appearance you want, whether you need dimming and how you would prefer to maintain the lights. Replaceable lamps and integrated fittings have different replacement arrangements. The chosen lights, drivers and controls need to work together.

Practical answers

Questions about led downlights & spotlights.

Can old halogen downlights be replaced with LEDs?

Yes, but the suitable approach may be a compatible lamp replacement or a new fitting. Check the existing fittings, drivers, dimmer and ceiling openings together before ordering LEDs.

Ask Max about this
Can downlights be covered with loft insulation?

Only where the specific product is intended for the relevant insulation and installation conditions. Selection must follow its instructions and suit the ceiling construction.

Ask Max about this
How many downlights does the room need?

There is no useful fixed count per square metre. The room shape, chosen fittings and positions of worktops, seating and other lights determine the layout. More downlights can add glare without improving light where it is needed.

Ask Max about this
Can new downlights use the holes left by my old fittings?

Sometimes. The replacement’s opening dimensions and installation requirements must suit the existing holes and ceiling. Otherwise a different fitting or ceiling repairs may be needed. Leave removal and checks above the ceiling to the electrician.

Ask Max about this
Can downlights be installed without lifting the floor upstairs?

Access depends on the ceiling void, joists, insulation and the routes between positions. Some layouts can be reached from below; others need access above or additional openings. Discuss those constraints before fixing the layout, and agree responsibility for floor reinstatement, plaster repairs and decoration.

Ask Max about this
Can I have brighter kitchen downlights and softer evening lighting?

Separate lighting groups or suitable dimming can help provide different settings. Plan around worktops, dining and seating rather than choosing one uniform grid. The selected fittings, drivers and controls must suit the intended operation, so share your preferred evening use as well as the task-lighting requirement.
