Feature pendant and task lighting in a fitted kitchen

Choose your starting point

What lighting would you like to change?

Start with the tasks, atmosphere and controls you need. Fitting choices and existing wiring can then be considered together.

Your next step

Kitchen and task lighting

Worktop lighting, ceiling lights and feature pendants can be planned separately so you can use the room comfortably at different times.

What the work includesScope, access and what to agree before the job.

What the job involves

Plan fittings, wiring and control as one job.

A lighting plan needs the positions, switching groups and product details. The wiring, drivers and controls should support the agreed way of using the room.

The scope, access and basis of the price are discussed before work is agreed.

Get a quoteStart with the details you know. Max can clarify the rest.
Discuss the room, current lighting and intended effect.

Separate worktop tasks, general room lighting and feature lighting. Explain what is uncomfortable or inadequate now.

Review fitting suitability and installation access.

Share fitting specifications, ceiling information and the intended location. Existing wiring and access affect the options.

Agree light positions, switching and any dimming requirements.

Decide which lights work together and where controls should be used. Dimmers, lamps and drivers need to be compatible.

Plan cable routes and associated making good.

New positions can require cable access and repairs to finishes. Clarify those responsibilities before installation.

Install, test and explain the operation of agreed controls.

The handover includes operation of the agreed controls and the checks and records appropriate to the installation.

Before the appointmentUseful decisions to discuss with Max.

Before the appointment

Avoid the choices that are awkward to fix afterwards.

Share room photos, fitting details and any dimming or smart-control requirements.

Colour and comfort

Different colour temperatures can change how finishes look and how a room feels. Discuss the intended use and existing lights before mixing products.

Dimming and smart control

LED lamps, drivers and dimmers need to be compatible. If smart switching is wanted, agree the exact functions and any network or device requirements.

Ceilings and maintenance

Recessed fittings require suitable space and installation conditions. Think about how lamps or drivers will be reached for future maintenance.

Plan your particular job

Decide how you want to control the light.

Fitting positions are only part of the plan. Switching, compatibility and the way people move through a room matter too.

Dimming, smart controls and separate lighting groups

Choose which lights should work together and where they should be controlled. General room lighting, worktop lighting and a pendant can be on different groups so the whole room does not have to operate at one level.

Share the proposed lamps, drivers and control products before buying them. Compatibility, available conductors, minimum loads and access to drivers can affect the options. For smart controls, agree what still works when the internet connection or app is unavailable.

Entrances, stairs and shared circulation

Explain the route from the entrance to each landing and where a person should be able to operate the lights. Mention existing two-way switches, sensors, timers and any place where a fitting is difficult to maintain.

For a shared building, identify who controls and pays for the installation and who can authorise changes. Ordinary decorative lighting, emergency lighting and fire-alarm systems have different purposes; ask for each required service to be separately identified in the scope.

Discuss this job
What affects the quoteEquipment, access and the details Max needs.

Understand the quote

What affects the scope and price?

A lighting quote should say whether it includes fittings, drivers, dimmers, new wiring and making good. Adding a new lighting position is a different scope from replacing an existing fitting.

The quote takes account of:

replacement or new wiring; type and number of fittings; ceiling and cable access; dimming or smart control requirements.

A useful lighting brief can be short.

Share room photos, fitting details and any dimming or smart-control requirements.

  • Tell us which parts of the room feel too dark or uncomfortable.
  • Share links or specifications for fittings you want to use.
  • Mention dimming, smart switching or separate lighting zones.
  • Confirm whether ceilings and walls are already decorated.

Practical answers

Questions before you book.

Can you install lighting I have bought?

Discuss the fitting specification first so suitability, access and compatibility can be checked before the appointment.

Ask Max about this
Can you add under-cabinet lights to a fitted kitchen?

Often there are options, but the route, connection and available access need to be assessed. A finished kitchen may limit concealed wiring choices.

Ask Max about this
Will new lighting damage the ceiling?

A replacement using an existing position may cause little disturbance. New positions or controls can require additional cable access and openings. The ceiling construction and access above it affect the options. Agree likely disturbance and repairs to finishes before work is priced.

Ask Max about this
Do you install outdoor lights?

Outdoor and security lighting are within the service scope. The design must consider the environment, supply, controls and practical cable routes.

Ask Max about this
Can you replace a pendant light with downlights?

Discuss the room, ceiling construction, access above and the light positions you want. Downlights need suitable installation space and product selection; their number should follow the lighting task rather than a fixed room-size rule. Share photos before buying fittings or arranging ceiling repairs.

Ask Max about this
Can new lights be controlled by separate switches?

Separate task, feature and general lighting can be useful, but the controls and cable routes need planning together. Describe how you use the room and where switches should be reached. Existing finished surfaces may affect the installation options, so settle the switching plan before work starts.

Ask Max about this
Why do my LED lights flicker when dimmed?

The lamp or driver and dimmer may be incompatible, although a connection or fitting fault can cause similar symptoms. Share the product details and when the flicker occurs. If there is heat, a burning smell or visible damage, stop using the affected equipment and call for advice.
