An entrance or staff access route

What the service includesDefine the work needed at your premises.

Define the work

Light the entrance, route and task.

The right position and control matter more than simply choosing a brighter floodlight. Describe what needs to be visible and when people use the area.

01

Doors, steps and pedestrian routes

Walk through the arrival and departure route in your description: the gate, path, steps and final door may each need consideration. Explain where staff or visitors currently struggle to see. The installation can then be discussed around the route as a whole, rather than a single fitting above the entrance.

02

Security lights and detection

Decide whether the aim is to illuminate a visitor approaching, provide light for a particular activity or avoid leaving fittings on unnecessarily. Sensor position, timer settings and manual control affect everyday use. Mention passing traffic, moving vegetation and other activity that might cause unwanted activation before products are selected.

03

Exterior wiring and fitting access

A suitable electrical supply, cable route and fixing position need to be considered alongside the light itself. Explain wall construction, mounting height and obstacles at ground level. The quote should define access equipment and any associated work, as well as the fittings and controls proposed for the outside environment.

Plan around your businessAccess, equipment and keeping the premises running.

Keep the premises in mind

Make the lighting work beyond your boundary.

Outside lighting needs to help people using your property while taking neighbouring premises, drivers and future maintenance into account.

Glare, neighbours and road users

Show nearby windows, public routes and vehicle approaches when you describe the site. The fitting direction and coverage should limit unwanted light beyond the intended area. A powerful light pointed across an entrance can make arrival less comfortable, so brightness alone is not a useful specification for the job.

Shadows and changing obstructions

Tell Max about parked vans, bins, signs, canopies and stock that might block the beam or sensor. Their positions can change the light that reaches a path. Photographs taken from more than one angle, without climbing or approaching electrical equipment, help show what an empty-space drawing might miss.

Controls and maintenance access

Agree who should be able to override the lighting and how its operating hours will be set. Consider how a future fitting replacement or adjustment can be reached safely. If the outside wall or supply belongs to a landlord, seek the relevant permission before the installation date is settled.

How to arrange the workFrom the first discussion to an agreed job.

From first contact to agreed work

Know the next step.

You can enquire before every detail is settled. The work, access and price are agreed before booking.

  1. Describe the dark area

Send the premises postcode, daytime photographs and a description of how the space is used after dark. Say whether this is a new installation, replacement or problem with existing controls.

  2. Agree coverage and access

Discuss fitting positions, likely cable routes and operating times with Max. Any assessment of the supply and mounting access informs the proposed scope, attendance arrangements and price for your premises.

  3. Install and set the controls

The agreed installation is tested and the control settings are explained. Review detection areas and operating times with the person who will manage the lights as your business hours change.

Practical answers

Questions about commercial outdoor & security lighting.

Can you replace a failed commercial security light?

Tell Max what has stopped working and where the fitting is mounted. The light, controls and supply may need checking before a replacement is chosen. Include a photograph taken from a safe position and mention access obstacles so the quote discussion covers the work needed to reach the fitting.

Ask Max about this
Should we choose a sensor or a timer?

That depends on when the area is used and whether light is needed continuously or only when someone approaches. A sensor can also respond to activity outside the intended zone. Explain staff hours, deliveries and the route people use so the control arrangement can be discussed for your premises.

Ask Max about this
How can we light an entrance without glare and dark patches?

Position and coverage matter as much as brightness. A poorly aimed floodlight can create glare while a step or doorway stays in shadow. Plan the approach route, obstacles and nearby windows together, then select the fitting and controls for that area.

Ask Max about this
Can lighting be installed on rented business premises?

It may be possible, but check who controls the wall, outside area and electrical supply. Your lease or landlord may require permission for new fixings and wiring. Share any restrictions with Max before the scope is agreed, especially where access or a supply crosses space used by another tenant.

Ask Max about this
Does this include emergency escape lighting?

This service covers everyday exterior and security lighting at business premises. Emergency escape lighting has a separate purpose and needs its own assessment and specification. If that is the requirement, describe it explicitly when enquiring so Max can clarify the scope rather than treating it as a standard outside light.

Ask Max about this
Can security lights be positioned without shining into neighbouring windows?

Explain the areas needing light and nearby homes, roads or neighbouring premises. Position, beam direction, shielding and control times should be considered together rather than choosing the brightest fitting available. Share daytime photographs and the times the entrance or yard is used to start the discussion.

Ask Max about this
Can an outside light run from a motion sensor and a manual switch?

The available functions depend on the fitting, sensor and wiring arrangement. Describe whether you want timed operation, movement detection, a manual override or separate areas. Check those requirements before buying products so the controls and cable routes can be planned as one installation.
